Missions alone may not keep Jason and Lucia together, Rockstar says
Playing only the story missions may not be enough to keep Jason and Lucia together. Rob Nelson (co-studio head and head of development at Rockstar North) says so in the full transcript of his IGN interview, published on 7 October. IGN recorded the conversation in July at Rockstar North while Nelson played about 30 minutes of the game live. Only the highlights came out in August; the new text runs to roughly ten thousand words.
The relationship is the part that changes the most. According to Nelson, the couple start the game "wanting to give it a shot", but keeping them together takes time spent in the open world: pool, mini golf, kayaking, scuba diving, the zoo, a walk on the beach, and robbing stores or banks together all count. Small things count too. When one of them texts "I'm going to bed" and you don't reply, the relationship can take a small hit. Nelson says a strong romance brings no particular gameplay benefit: the story keeps them together as partners in crime for most of the game. It will, however, affect how their story plays out. Asked whether the ending depends on a few big choices or many small ones, he answered "Both".
Car theft now works in tiers, and this time Rockstar describes it in its own words. Some parked cars stay locked until the story hands you the right tools: one needs a slim jim, another a key cloner. A scanner in the phone shows whether a car is locked, alarmed or tracked, what a fence will pay for it and what registering it costs. A car with an advanced tracker reports its position to the police whenever you drive slowly. You can still carjack any driver on the road.
The police work the same way, through what they know about you. A crime only counts once a witness or an alarm reports it. The cops remember your face, your outfit and your car. A new haircut alone won't throw them off, but buying and wearing a new outfit clears your heat. Spare clothes and every weapon you have bought ride in the trunk of your personal vehicle. With three stars in the city, Nelson says, escaping on foot through the alleys usually beats trying to outrun them in a car. Getting busted is still a plain restart, as in earlier games.
Beyond the police, Nelson describes a slower, more grounded day to day. The safehouse is closer to the camps of Red Dead Redemption 2 than to old GTA safehouses, and it isn't even the couple's own home: they are staying in someone else's house. Eating gives a substantial health buff, overeating makes you put on weight, and a gym session together trains both characters at once. Snapmatic is only for lurking, because a couple on the run doesn't post. Money also matters more than before: at points in the story you have to earn it to unlock the next missions.
For players, this means GTA 6 rewards time spent in the world, not a rush through the story. Nelson says the game is so big that nobody on the team knows all of it. During the demo, Jason suggested robbing a police impound lot with a line Nelson had never heard before. The game comes out on 19 November on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
