Three switchable leads, no fixed pair.

One city vs a whole state

GTA 5's San Andreas boils down to Los Santos and its Blaine County hinterland: one metropolis, one desert. GTA 6's Leonida is a stylized take on the whole of Florida — Vice City is the hub, but official material also shows swampland, coastal keys and small towns beyond the city line. Community measurements based on the trailers put the map at roughly twice the size of GTA 5's, an estimate we track as a rumor until Rockstar publishes real numbers.

From a trio to a duo

GTA 5 rotated three protagonists — Michael, Franklin and Trevor — and let you switch between them mid-mission. GTA 6 narrows the cast to two: Jason and Lucia, partners in crime with a Bonnie-and-Clyde dynamic, and Lucia is the series' first female lead. How switching works this time is something Rockstar hasn't shown yet, so that comparison waits for the gameplay reveal.

Same engine, thirteen years apart

Both games run on RAGE, Rockstar's in-house engine, but thirteen years of hardware sit between them. GTA 5 shipped on PS3 and Xbox 360 and was ported forward twice; GTA 6 skips the past entirely: PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only, no last-gen version. The trailers spend that power on density — crowds, water, lighting and interiors rather than sheer map size alone.

The GTA 6 side, sourced

Every GTA 6 claim above comes from confirmed Rockstar material. Here are the receipts.

The game is set in the state of Leonida, a fictional take on Florida, centered on modern-day Vice City. Official locations include the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga National Park.

Frequently asked questions

Is GTA 6's map bigger than GTA 5's?

Almost certainly, but there are no official numbers. Community estimates built on trailer footage put Leonida at roughly twice GTA 5's San Andreas. We file that as a rumor until Rockstar confirms it.

Do I need to play GTA 5 before GTA 6?

No. Mainline GTA games tell standalone stories in their own cities, and GTA 6 starts fresh in Leonida with a new cast. Play GTA 5 because it's worth it, not as homework.

Will GTA 5 keep getting updates after GTA 6 arrives?

GTA Online is still being fed: The Kortz Center Heist, its first all-new heist since 2020, lands on July 14, 2026 — widely read as the last big drop before GTA 6. Rockstar has said nothing about switching the older game off.

Can I play GTA 6 on PS4 or Xbox One?

No. GTA 6 is confirmed for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only. GTA 5 stays on the older consoles, and PS4 / Xbox One owners get a free current-gen upgrade of GTA 5 in July 2026.
