Take-Two says GTA 6 pre-orders "vastly" beat its own forecasts, and still won't name a number
Take-Two reported its first quarter of fiscal 2027 before the market opened on Friday, August 7, and the headline number was $1.39 billion in Net Bookings for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, slightly above the top of its own $1.32 to $1.37 billion guidance. The company reiterated its full-year outlook of $8.0 to $8.2 billion. In the release, CEO Strauss Zelnick tied that directly to the game: "With these positive trends and excitement around the November 19th launch of Grand Theft Auto VI, we are reiterating our Fiscal 2027 Net Bookings outlook of $8.0 to $8.2 billion."
The part everyone was waiting on was pre-orders, and Zelnick spent the day reaching for superlatives. On the call he described them as unprecedented, astonishing and astronomical, and said nobody has ever seen anything like it. In a same-day interview with Bloomberg's Jason Schreier he was asked point blank whether pre-orders had beaten Take-Two's internal forecasts, and answered that they had "vastly" beaten them. What he never did was give a figure. No units, no dollars, no ranking. And despite all of that language, the full-year guidance was reiterated rather than raised.
That combination looks strange until you check the calendar, which is what we flagged in our August 6 note on the earnings date. Pre-orders opened on June 25 and the reported quarter closed on June 30, so only five days of the campaign fall inside these results. Zelnick said as much himself. Any pre-order commentary on this call was always going to be color rather than revenue, and the number that carries real information is the fiscal 2027 guidance, which covers the November launch.
The rest of the quarter is worth reading carefully, because "beat" here means beat its own forecast, not grew. Net Bookings of $1.39 billion are down 3 percent from $1.42 billion a year earlier. GAAP net revenue moved the other way, up 2 percent to $1.53 billion. The GAAP net loss per share widened to $(0.18) from $(0.07). Guidance for the second quarter, the last full quarter before launch, is $1.62 to $1.67 billion. Take-Two credited better than expected results from NBA 2K and Grand Theft Auto for the quarter coming in where it did.
One genuinely new milestone did land in the report: Grand Theft Auto V has now passed 230 million units sold in across three console generations, with the franchise as a whole above 474 million. Recurrent consumer spending across the Grand Theft Auto series grew 3 percent year over year, meaning the thirteen-year-old game is still paying for the wait.
Zelnick also talked about the August 27 showcase, and this is where the interview added something the Rockstar announcement did not. He called it a must-see event, and when Schreier asked whether it would feel like watching a Netflix show, he said yes, pointing to the streaming platform's reach as the reason for the partnership. He also framed the premiere as one of the hors d'oeuvres rather than the end of the marketing campaign, which implies more to come between August 27 and November 19. Still absent from every official statement: the words gameplay and Trailer 3, and any running time. The expectation that this is the gameplay reveal remains an expectation.
The other thing worth pinning down is GTA Online, because the coverage got noisy. On the call Zelnick said what the company is selling is a single-player experience, and that it does expect to support GTA Online going forward. Schreier's reading is that Rockstar has not discussed what a new GTA Online looks like and is not planning to anytime soon. That is not the same as saying GTA 6 ships without an online mode, and the precedent is right there: the original GTA Online arrived weeks after GTA 5, not alongside it.
Nothing in any of this moved the release date. November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S stands where it was. We have updated our revenue projection fact with the reiterated $8.0 to $8.2 billion range and added the GTA Online position as its own sourced entry.
