Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look drove more than 100,000 US Netflix sign-ups on its premiere day, according to research firm Ampere Analysis. Netflix, Rockstar and Take-Two have published no subscriber figures of their own.

Verdict Rumor

Ampere Analysis put the estimate out on 10 September 2026. It says the Extended Look, which ran as a six-hour Netflix exclusive on 27 August, brought the service more than 100,000 new US sign-ups on premiere day. Only the final Stranger Things instalment and the Rousey vs Carano card lifted sign-ups higher in 2026, and the showing beat almost every live sports broadcast Netflix carried this year.

The second number in the same release is the more interesting one. Ampere's PlumResearch panel found that more than 5% of US users who had not opened Netflix in 30 days came back and watched the showing before anything else. For winning back lapsed viewers it beat every series and every film on the service over the measured period. Senior analyst Katie Holt reads the deal plainly: Netflix is buying a place in gaming culture without owning any games. Research manager Louise Wooldridge adds that an event this size pulls an audience by itself.

Two caveats matter before the figure gets compared with anything else. It covers the US only and counts gross sign-ups rather than net subscriber growth, so it does not sit next to the 31.1 million worldwide views from Netflix's own chart. And the unit measured is the whole premiere day, not the six-hour exclusive window.
